Washington, DC - The United States of America’s Capital City

Washington, D.C. or the erstwhile District of Columbia and usually known as Washington, the District, or merely D.C., is the United States of America’s capital city. Established on the 16th day of July in the year 1790, the City of Washington was initially a distinct municipality inside the Columbia territory till an act of Congress in the year 1871 effectually brought the city and territory together and united them as one unit, namely the District of Columbia. This is the reason why, the country capital, lawfully named District of Columbia, is famously spoken of as Washington, D.C. The city is situated on the northern shore of the River Potomac and is surrounded on the southwestern side by the state of Virginia and on all other sides, by the state of Maryland. While Washington DC has close to 600,000 inhabitants, as a result of commuting populace from the neighboring suburban areas, the population count crosses one million every week on the working days. The bigger Washington Metropolitan Area, a part of which is the District of Columbia, has 5.3 million residents, making it the eighth biggest metropolitan area in the United States of America.

Washington D.C. houses all three offshoots of the country’s federal government along with a plethora of important monuments and museums. Along with the country’s president’s residence and office at the White House, headquarters of the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other firms, associations, and groups, the city also has about 174 foreign embassies. The United States Congress has utmost power over Washington, D.C. meaning that the populace has minimal self-governance compared to other states’ residents.

Earlier, the area that is now Washington D.C., used to be farmlands, rolling hills, and mainly swamps near rivers and streams. Point Reno, in Fort Reno Park is the area’s highest natural point while the Potomac River at sea level, is the lowest. With almost 20 per cent of the city covered in green parks, it is one of the greenest cities in the country. As far as climate is concerned, the city has four distinct seasons, with hot, humid summers, mild springs and autumns, and cold, snowy winters, often accompanied by blizzards.
